Meet the Doctors


Dr. Thomas W. Butterfoss

Dr_Tom_ButterfossDr. Tom Butterfoss has been in private orthodontic practice since 1992. He has been in practice with his daughter, Dr. Jennifer Barton, since 2004. Dr. Butterfoss received his Bachelor’s and Doctor of Dental Medicine degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. After eight years of general practice, he returned to the University of Pennsylvania to complete his post-doctoral work in orthodontics. Dr. Butterfoss was Chief Mentor of Orthodontics for a post-graduate dental residency program at Fort Jackson. He has served as president of the University of Pennsylvania Alumni Association and the Tidewater Orthodontic Society, and was a delegate for the Virginia Dental Association. Dr. Butterfoss served 15 years on active duty as an Army dental officer and then 10 years in the Army reserves as a consultant to the Hampton VA Hospital Department of Dentistry. He is now serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dr. Butterfoss is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association, the Southern Society of Orthodontists, the Tidewater Orthodontic Society, and the Peninsula Dental Society. He is a Board Certified Orthodontist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. He is also an active member of the Angle Orthodontic Society, an international orthodontic study club.

Dr. Butterfoss, and his wife, Fran, are active supporters of the Shenandoah National Park Foundation and have sponsored three "Track Trails" in the Park.  He and his wife are also scholarship sponsors for the York County Educational Foundation.  Dr. Butterfoss serves on the  directing boards of both the Yorktown Victory YMCA and they Gloucester Boys and Girls Club. He has been active in athletics all of this life. Dr. Butterfoss was a three time National Rowing Champion at the University of Pennsylvania and a member of the 1972 Olympic team, and currently competes at the national level in the Masters Rowing category.

Dr. Butterfoss and his wife, Fran, have three children: Jennifer, Ryan and Adam and seven grandchildren.

Dr. Jennifer L. Butterfoss Barton

Dr_Jennifer_BartonDr. Jennifer L. Butterfoss Barton has been practicing orthodontics on the Peninsula with her father since 2004. She is a graduate of York High School and the College of William and Mary, where she received a Bachelor’s in Business Administration and a minor in Chemistry while completing her pre-med requirements. Dr. Barton attended the Medical College of Virginia at VCU, where she received her Doctorate in Dental Surgery. Dr. Barton graduated Magna Cum Laude. She is a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon and Phi Beta Phi honor society. She completed her orthodontic residency at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky where she earned a Master’s in Oral Biology in addition to her orthodontics certificate.

Dr. Barton is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, Southern Association of Orthodontists, the Tidewater Orthodontic Association and the Peninsula Dental Society. Dr. Barton and her husband, Dan, have three amazing children that keep them busy on the soccer field, basketball court, dance studio and ice skating rink. She strives to treat all her patients as she would her own family.

Dr. Nick Pappas

Nick_PappasA native of Virginia and former patient of Butterfoss and Barton Orthodontics, Dr. Pappas graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. Dr. Pappas received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Virginia Commonwealth University. After dental school, Dr. Pappas was commissioned as an Officer in the United States Air Force as a dentist. During his service with the Air Force, he completed a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency. It was during this time he met his wife, Kelly, and had an opportunity to be stationed and serve at Travis Air Force Base, California and Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina. After his time in the military, he completed his orthodontic residency at the University of Iowa, where he finished with a Master of Science in Orthodontics and received a certificate in Orthodontics.

Dr. Pappas enjoys giving back to the community through the Mission of Mercy Projects, where he has traveled to underserved areas of Virginia providing dental care. He has also provided dental services to rural communities in Jamaica and Honduras.

In his spare time, Dr. Pappas likes to play sand volleyball and soccer, eat burritos, search for his golf ball in the woods, and spend time with his friends, family, and two dogs. Dr. Pappas and Kelly are looking forward to meeting patients and their families in our practice and community. Come meet him at our Grafton, Hampton, and Gloucester locations!
